It's A Koi!

Monkey off my back. A fish I’ve been trying to add to the species hunt, the koi has proved tricky to say the least. I’ve had half a dozen chances - and hooked and lost three - one literally over the net! And it’s getting colder, I thought I was running out of time...

On the river I was watching a koi repeatedly swimming the same circuit, briefly pausing behind a submerged root each time. The third or fourth time he stopped behind the root there was about 10 grains of sweet corn waiting - one of which contained a hook!

Edit: it has been pointed out that this is a ghost carp not a koi carp - thanks Grant. The quest for a koi continues....

    1. Quick check of the different carp species... It’s A Ghostie!

So you’re right, the quest for a koi continues, I thought they were koi & ornamental koi - you learn something new everyday :-)

    2. yeah, that's a koi/carp cross.usually anything from silver to gold, and can be linear, fully scaled, mirror and leather.basically all carp will interbreed,so there are dozens of combinations.we used to have koi,all the varieties of carp including wildies and magoi(black koi carp),plus ghosties, and they all bred so in the end we didn't know what they were.koi breeding isn't simple either.you can have 2 yellow ones, and they can produce all colours! waterworld in hertfordshire used to sell european barbel, which led to claims that some rivers contained them and why barbel which topped at at 14.6 for 50 odd years suddenly grew to huge sizes.it was of course hnv baits and improving water quality, and only otters that led to the demise.

    1. No it’s great, another species to aim at (yeah, loose definitions of species on this challenge I know). Time to find a true koi...

    1. Nope, it’s going to be ghost and (hopefully) koi - not breaking them down any further!
