After a fantastic trip it was time to unpack and hit the river. Well it’s rained - the vegetation is green and the river overgrown. And those brown seed things that stick to you are everywhere! Time to dodge seeds and try and find a barbel...
The water was high and dirty, chub time? Third swim I hit a chub that I thought was a six in the water, it shrank in the net, but at 5lb 4oz it’s a new best from the river - and after releasing it I found my camera was set on macro - I know, photos or it didn’t happen!
I lost another big chub before landing two more, but these were regular size - going to have to catch a 5lb 5oz plus chub now, it’s going to annoy me. But the barbel made up for it; 2lb, 5lb 6oz and the cracking
9lb 12oz (below). It’s good to be back!
Back and on it. Coming into autumn and the best time of the year I reckon
ReplyDeleteHad to check the river was still there :-)
DeleteYeah, should really come to life now after the heatwave.
the horrible stuff is burdock,as in the drink.don't try pulling any up til the depths of winter-you'll get a hernia! by the way,it rained heavily sunday for 8 hours.there are live level reports on twitter if you search the river.
ReplyDeleteNot going to pull them up, trying my best not to touch them - always bring some back though!
DeleteI use GaugeMap, it’s pretty good although sometimes slow to update - but I was going no matter what the conditions!!
i was hoping you could explain how the bloody thing works! it tells me it's -0.23m at 6.15am,but that's when they abstract water for the plant.what is 'normal' would help.i will go anyway, but been forced to go home a few times when rising.it's no fun trying to land whole trees that float past
DeleteI don’t even read the measurements, after it’s rained I just watch it to see when it returns to the normal pattern. And sometimes I still go and try and fish around the floating trees!!
DeleteWay to hit the ground running
ReplyDeleteI left during the heatwave, couldn’t wait to grab a barbel fight on my return :-)
