Dental Spam

I arrived a few minutes early to the dentist, a double appointment, not something I was looking forward to. Instead of sitting in the waiting room I thought I’d pop next door and buy a tin of Spam - I’d look forward to doing a bit of barbel fishing afterwards.

Not paying 5p for a bag, and only wearing shorts and a t-shirt I had nowhere to put it. So left it on the side in the surgery, looking over my dental appointment like a weird lucky mascot - perhaps they thought I was going to test my teeth on my way home!

While the dentist hammered, sawed and drilled away I planned my trip, and by the end I’d landed 10 barbel in my mind. Home, grabbed the kit and on the riverbank it didn’t go exactly to plan - but two barbel - both about 5lb - that’ll do nicely!

  1. Fab! Out of curiosity, how do you fish rolling meet on, ahem, this kind of river?

    1. Meat with hook well buried so it won’t catch on anything, shot to sink it about 4 inches away and small shot about a foot above that so they don’t hit the line before they pick it up.

This was a last minute thing but if you think ahead, unlike me, open and cut up the meat a day or two in advance and leave it in the fridge - they are suspicious if it’s too fresh.

    3. I normally favour the meat myself, not sure if it works because of the flavouring or despite it! Beneath British Waters, lovely shots of pike.

  2. i just like to think at least they're not seeing exactly the same thing every time.can mask human scent and colour the meat.have literally used every flavour now so stick to favourites, but can thoroughly recommend avoiding pineapple-took bloody ages to score on that!top 5:garlic/bpo/bacon/chicken/source,oh ok,6,mega spicy(braddocks),7 crab,8 plum,9 lamprey.

    1. I experimented and mixed up my own, so I knew it would be different to anything else they’d seen. Exact recipe is a secret but there’s plenty of curry and mustard in it...

    1. Mustard is great because the scent lasts even after a long soak in the river.
