Wye Felina

The end of the season, and to The Wye one last time with high hopes of one last pike before the break. But the river still hates me - floods and boiling red water - and even more cold water washing down...

Hopes improved when I found this side stream - almost clear water, the perfect sanctuary from the conditions for a big predator. A sardine was cast out and I was almost surprised when nothing snapped it up...

Time for a cup of tea and a bit of a rethink! I'd still chuck a pike bait in the limited slacks - slim chance was better than no chance. And put out a cube of meat on the second rod - see if anything fancied it...

The chub & barbel weren't really on the feed, it was a struggle to find feeding fish - but eventually 6 little barbel and 6 chub saved a blank. Not an epic close to the season - but think I made the best of it!

  1. Man alive Brian, you've gotta start checking those river levels and working out when and where the rain is coming in. we've learned that about the Trent. Saves wasted trips and gruellers.

    1. My trips to The Wye are pretty much set; Christmas, my brother booked tickets months in advance and end of season - but you’d think I’d occasionally bump into decent conditions!!

How did you get on this season?

    2. I'll have to consult the notebook when I have time.early on until late autumn I concentrated on the small river and the Thames, from the on it was the Trent and the occasional Thames trip.a few 10's and big hits on the small river until Terry the terrapin peed me off once too many.i took hi for a long walk.nothing amazing from the Thames syndicate, though I did manage 6 in one session on maggots, and it did a 16-11 late on.no big hits on the Trent, but plenty of doubles to 13-24.

    4. A few 10’s on the Small River sounds great - and poor old Terry! Still haven’t tried the Thames, really must next time. And plenty of doubles on The Trent - excellent - really should head up there again.

Sounds like you had a cracking season - nice one!

    5. And a 13-24, you don’t get those very often :-)

  2. A lot of folk would be more than happy with that catch on a boiling Wye, you just need to pick the species. Having said that, my mate was fishing in Hereford yesterday and landed a 8.4 sea trout.
Hey ho, there's always next time.

    1. Think I made the best of it. Was looking forward to it for a week or so and the conditions seemed to be getting better and better - until I arrived!

Nice sea trout, should be a few in the river now, and like you said, next time…

    1. Always good to end with a few fish on the bank. Need to get back on The Wye a few times before the inevitable Christmas floods!
