Had to use up the remaining maggots from The Itchen - only one thing for it - an afternoon on the Small River chasing gudgeon - and I caught loads! Probably 30+, so I thought I'd have a mini species hunt. Eight species including 2 ultra-rare perch and 12 mini-barbel...
Am I overthinking?

Small fish are often better looking than their older relatives, the barbel are sublime but mini pike rule.
ReplyDeleteThose baby barbel look great - and you don’t get to see them very often (on most rivers). Let’s hope I can add a few photos of some mini-pike - and hopefully some big ones as well!
DeleteCompletely agree with that. Mini pike are the best.
DeleteAgreed. And until I catch some more, I’ve got a few here: www.pikeblog.com/2018/10/micro-pike.html
DeleteMy elder brother's first pike was about six inches long. A perfect mini=pike. His second ever pike was 20 lb's plus which grabbed a small chub he'd hooked and didn't let go.
ReplyDeleteThat’s the way to progress! Been a long time since I’ve had a twenty… Maybe his season?!?
DeleteGreat stuff! A baby barbel is about the only thing haven't caught on the float from my local rivers.
ReplyDeleteYou don’t see baby barbel on most rivers - they seem to appear when they’re three or four pounds - don’t know why. But beautiful little fish.
DeletePerfection in miniature !!!
ReplyDeleteBeauties - plus they all count on my barbel total :-)
DeleteI was getting loads early on using maggots and a fair few even took pellets and small dumbbells.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot in there - good news for the future - but I think the average size is getting smaller - hope some grow on to the size we want!
DeleteAlways nice to see little fish prospering!
ReplyDeleteSometimes it nice to leave the specimen hunting and just get a bunch of fish…
DeleteFantastic!
ReplyDeleteLove this type of fishing once in a while!
