Wye 22: Last Chance

It was supposed to be the traditional Xmas Fish Off with Dyl & Steve but the weather was awful, strong winds, driving rain and Steve wasn't well. Was a shame - I really fancied a win this year - might have to come back in January or February...

Instead I headed to The Wye, with about 3 hours until dark I abandoned the pike gear and tried to bag a barbel before returning to London. Three chub to 4lb 10oz and a little barbel of 4lb 11oz found the net. At least a Wye barbel wanted to play! (+1.6)

  1. It's the thing about rivers that they never stand still. The Wye is in a state of flux, the fish move great distances according to their needs and whims so, next year may be completely different.

    1. Saw loads of barbel in there in the summer, and didn’t take long to tempt one even in the cold water - perhaps I should have fished for them instead of pike. But Wye pike are my favourite fish, so let’s hope next year is different - fingers crossed!

    1. Tough trip if I’m honest, really fancied putting a few Wye pike on the bank this Christmas. Probably made the best out of it with the chub and barbel, but I will be back for those elusive esox..!

  3. Tough going mate, but as the old adage goes "you won't catch them sat at home". Roll on July/August for our return.

    1. The water just warmed up enough on the last day to tempt a barbel. Looking forward to bagging a few in the summer - roll on the return!
