Winter Wander - Itchen

An early start saw me & James head out into the frost - the plan was to wander down The Itchen from the fast flowing water in search of grayling to the slower water with the hope of a winter roach...

Travelling light (even for us) we worked our way down - stopping briefly in likely looking spots to run a float through - then moving on - we had a lot of water to cover. I'll let the photos tell my story...

Five grayling to just over a pound...

Loads of brown trout - had to get a photo of this beauty...

A very rare (for this section) bream...

But the main event was the roach in a slower section...

Fifteen roach landed, several over a pound, to 1lb 7oz...

A brilliant day's winter wandering!

  3. Thoroughly enjoyed that day, even if it was bloody hard going, at least we had a nag for good few hours and drowned some maggots.

    1. Great day even though the grayling were playing hard to get. All that effort tracking down some maggots and bread was the killer bait..!

    2. I know, I did think that when I was looking back on the session, but, I do think the maggots stimulated the Roach into feeding, without them I think we would have had far fewer.

    3. Think I caught my first 7 or 8 on maggots but once there was bread in the water that’s all they wanted. It was interesting they only wanted a moving bait - all info stored for next time...

    1. Cheers. They always look bigger than their weight to me, can’t wait until I’m peering down at a ‘two’ in the net!!
