Healthy River

I could just about squeeze a couple of hours fishing in this afternoon, time to have a blast at a monster 10oz plus dace. Half a pint of maggots and a spot of trotting was in order. I found dace but not the giants I was after, but it was still an enjoyable way to waste a couple of hours.

I caught another baby barbel, this time even further downstream from where they stocked them a few years ago after the pollution. I'm pretty sure these are too small to be stockies, they must have been spawned in the river, a good sign for the future...

And this photo gives me an idea for a new screensaver!

  1. There are quite a few reports banging around of Barbel that sort of size in several stretches.

    1. I'd only ever seen one barbel under a pound before fishing the Wandle (caught in a net) and the smallest one caught on rod & line was 3lb 8oz.

It's great to see them, I think it's one of the few rivers (I've heard of anyway) where the babies get caught regularly.

I wasn't randomly hoping for a big dace, I had seen two shoals of nice sized fish.

    1. Only ever saw one in the Wye, the one caught netting eels (illegal I know, but we were putting them back - this is about 20 years ago).

They don't seem to come out on rod and line for some reason, but there must be loads in there.
